3 Christmas Stage Design Ideas To Try At Your Church This Holiday Season

Christmas is just around the corner, and we know many churches are still dreaming up stage designs...

for this year’s Christmas programs. If you're still in need of some inspiration before Christmas arrives, we’ve got you covered!

These designs leverage LED walls and screens as the main focal point. This allows your congregation and audience to follow along with the service while still enjoying the feelings of the season with supplementary decor. Many of these traditional Christmas elements are easy to create with a little DIY skill and your local craft store.

Now, let’s get to inspiring!

Words highlighted in string

This trend is coming back around in 2022 and an easy way to highlight any theme of your Christmas program. The simplicity of this design speaks volumes and helps tell your service’s story before it even kicks off. Whether the word you choose is Jesus, Savior, Gifts, or something else, connect the word you choose to your larger message – possibly even calling out the display during the sermon.

To create this design, you simply need plywood, letter templates, twine, and glue. You’ll also need a saw to cut the stencil and scissors to cut the twine. Beyond these items, you can also decorate as you’d like with things like lights, glitter, and cotton for snow. Decide how large you want to make each letter and simply stencil the letter on the desired piece of wood, cut out the letter, and wrap the plywood in twine (soaked in the glue to keep it in place), starting from the outside and looping into the removed letter portion. Repeat this process until the entire board is covered.

You’ll want to let each letter dry and then complete the rest of your stage design, with this word being your centerpiece. If you want to hang the letter from your display, ensure the plywood you use is light enough to do so.

Abstract backdrops with lights telling the story

A backdrop that enhances your story can make a huge impact, even without being overly complex. Much like a set for a musical production or play, the stage can play into your storyline without having to be a moving rig or complex design. We love combining a simple backdrop with lights to tell any story. Try creating an abstract backdrop using shapes or lines. Repeating patterns or hand drawn designs are perfect for this type of set up. Once you have your background created, use lights to enhance the stage. Explore different colors, angles, and timers on your lights to create visual interest and support your message.

This design is simple, fun, and easy to execute.

Floating spheres

Nothing says Christmas quite like the charm of snow and lights. If you’re looking for a unique way to incorporate these elements into your display, try floating spheres to imitate that magical setup. Floating spheres can be filled with lights, snow, and other elements to elevate the design and make things feel more like Christmas. We also recommend hanging these spheres or globes from different heights throughout the stage. In addition to the globes, hanging lights and ribbon draped over your stage’s ‘ceiling’ can create a more intimate set for your band and pastors to be in.
