What to Choose: LED Wall vs. Projector

You’re most likely reading this because you’re in the middle of deciding which type of upgrade is appropriate for your…

situation, an LED video wall or a projector. Whether you’re needing to upgrade your video system, moving into a new space, or just doing research for the future, there is no blanket answer for which option is best for your environment. There are advantages and disadvantages to both video display options. An unbiased review is necessary in order to make the best decision for your organization.

First, let’s look at projectors. We won’t dive too deeply into the specifications and vast options of projectors but we will highlight some common advantages and disadvantages to consider. Some of the variables include throw, lumens, portability, zoom range, and more. The following are some general characteristics to consider:

* Cost- As you can imagine, no two models of projectors are created equal. But upfront prices can be as low as $200. Unfortunately, they can go as high as $50,000.

  • Ambient light- If your space has lots of natural light, you’ll want to consider a projector with increased power output to cut through the ambient light.
  • Maintenance cost- On average a single projector bulb will cost a minimum of $300 and can reach up to $1500. The frequency of bulb replacements will vary depending on your usage. In some cases, reaching the mounting point on your ceiling will involve utilizing a specialized lift (which is an added expense if you don’t already own one).
  • Portability- If you’re not looking to ever change up your scene from time to time, then projectors may be a good option for you. On the other hand, if you’re creative and like to change up the scene, then projectors may be limiting your creative process.
  • Longevity- Depending on your budget, how long do you anticipate to hold onto the same piece of equipment? If you’re looking to make a long-term investment, then a projector may not be the route to take as their average lifespan is around 5 years.

Next, we’ll examine LED video walls. Again, there are many brands, a lot of options, and a wide variety of bells of whistles to choose from. We’ll look at the most common factors.

  • Ambient Light- Whether you’re indoors or outdoors, most LED walls average at 2000 NITS in brightness. This means they can cut through any ambient light. In addition, most video processors have brightness control on the unit which allows you to customize the exact brightness that’s appropriate for the space you’re in.
  • Maintenance cost- There are no bulbs to change, ever. In some cases, you’ll have a pixel fail or a module go bad. Swapping out a module is very simple and low-cost. The process, at most, requires a Philips head screwdriver.
  • Portability- LED walls are made up of small panels (usually square or rectangular), this gives you the ability to create multiple configurations and designs. If you’re a creative organization and like changing up the look of your environment, LEDs may be a good fit for you.
  • Longevity- 100,000 hours is the average lifespan of an LED video wall. Depending on how often you use the wall, you can end up getting 10-15+ years out of it.

Batches- LEDs are created in “batches” and no batch is created exactly the same. Purchasing new panels to combine with older panels can create color variations.
Weight- Video wall units can weigh anywhere from several hundred to a few thousand pounds, (depending on the number of panels). You may have additional renovation costs to consider if your structure isn’t equipped to handle this added weight.

Obviously, there are more details and options that go into each choice but this resource should give you a good general overview. If you’re looking for more guidance and help with your project, we are here as a resource to you and available to have a conversation.
